Book Description «The Divorce» Freida McFadden

Naomi thought she had it figured out. Good husband, good kid, the kind of house people slow down to stare at when they drive by. Then one ordinary afternoon, the garage door won’t open. Neither will the front door.

Jeremy calls it a surprise – a renovation, a gift for their anniversary. Naomi believes him, because why wouldn’t she? You don’t question fifteen years of marriage over a locked door. So she packs a bag, moves into his parents’ guest room “just for a few weeks,” and waits for the big reveal.

It comes the next morning. Except instead of an anniversary card, Jeremy hands her divorce papers.

No fight. No warning. No “we need to talk.” Just a clean, cold ambush from a man who’s clearly been planning his exit far longer than she’s known. And there’s already someone else waiting in the wings – Ronni, twenty-something, effortlessly gorgeous, and already trying on the role of Teddy’s new mom for size.

A lot of women would fall apart right there. Naomi doesn’t. Something colder kicks in instead. She tells herself it’s a midlife crisis, a phase, anything but what it actually is – right up until she discovers Jeremy quietly hired every decent divorce lawyer in the city before she even knew there was a war on. And that’s just the opening move.

Because somebody ends up dead in that house. The book starts with sirens and two bodies, then winds the clock back to show you exactly how a “happy” marriage got there.

This is where McFadden does what she does best – peeling back suburban perfection one ugly layer at a time. Custody fights, drained bank accounts, gaslighting dressed up as concern, a five-year-old caught in the middle of it all – and just when you think you’ve got a read on who’s the victim here, the story flips and hands the mic to Ronni. Everything you assumed about this marriage gets thrown out the window.

Nobody in this story is exactly who they claim to be. Not the husband. Not the wife. Not the girlfriend who was supposed to be the uncomplicated part of the equation. By the last page, you’re not asking who wins the divorce – you’re asking who deserves to survive it.

ЦитатаWhat he wants and what is going to happen are two completely different things.
Цитата“Naomi,” he says, “you deserve so much better than that asshole. You are an incredible person, and you are a lot stronger than you give yourself credit for. You are smart, you are a great mother, and…” He pauses. “And you’re beautiful.”
Цитата“I like to print everything out," he says. "I don't trust computers entirely. I feel like I can't be sure something isn't going to disappear unless I have it on paper.”
Цитата“Even if we’re not married anymore, it would be weird not to have it on my finger anymore. And frankly, it’s not his choice to make. It’s my finger.”
