Here’s the thing about women nobody expects much from: give them a good enough reason, and they get inventive.
To get Meg out of that orphanage for real, Birdie and Charlie don’t bother with the bank, or the church, or anyone polite enough to say no nicely. They throw open the doors of a grand, half-forgotten mansion and start running it as exactly the kind of business respectable Oxford would rather pretend doesn’t exist – fast cash, faster gossip, and a guest list full of women the town already wrote off as ruined. Calling it bold barely covers it.
It’s 1933. The Depression is eating through everyone’s savings, Prohibition is basically a formality by this point, and the gap between respectable and reckless has never been thinner. Stockett – yes, the one behind The Help – still knows exactly how to needle Southern hypocrisy without ever losing the warmth underneath it, and she does it again here, just sharper. One page you’re cackling at some poor soul’s social humiliation over lunch, and the next you’re gutted by exactly what these women are up against.
This isn’t really a story about a secret brothel, or a scandal, or even the orphanage itself. It’s about what happens when the world keeps handing women nothing and they decide to build something out of it anyway. Funny, furious, and unexpectedly tender all at once – The Calamity Club is worth every bit of the wait since The Help.
